A classic Beckett play with the great actors Walter Hess and Stefan Merki on the stage of the Munich Kammerspiele: In 'Words & Music', language and music fight for supremacy. Which came first? And what is more important?
JEWISH
Was Samuel Beckett Jewish? No, he wasn't. But the composer he entrusted with the setting of his radio play Words & Music was: Morton Feldman. "Because I am Jewish, I cannot identify with the music of Western civilization. If Bach gives us a diminished fourth, I cannot say that the diminished fourth means 'O God'. [...] Our morality in music is the German music of the nineteenth century, isn't it? I think about it, and I think about the fact that I want to be the first great composer who is Jewish."
TODAY
The theme is timeless and always relevant: Salieri already dealt with it in Prima la musica, poi le parole (engl. First the music, then the words ) with what is probably more important. Beckett lets the characters 'words' and the 'music' represented by an instrumental ensemble confront each other - the audience can decide for themselves which level of communication moves them more.
FOR ALL
An evening for everyone, an evening for the celebrant Walter Hess . We are celebrating the 85th birthday of the actor, who has been on the stage of the Munich Kammerspiele since 2002. A classic Beckett evening with two great actors: the celebrant and Stefan Merki – be there!
