Martin Valdés-Stauber
Martin Valdés-Stauber studied sociology and economics in Munich, Friedrichshafen, Berkeley, and Cambridge. Since returning to Germany, he has taught at various universities. From 2017 to 2023, he was part of the artistic management team at the Münchner Kammerspiele (Theater of the Year 2019 and 2020). Since 2023, he has been dramaturg at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. He also has a close artistic working relationship with cabaret artist Maxi Schafroth and choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas.
Martin Valdés-Stauber designs artistic projects for JCOM and provides dramaturgical support for projects including “Aus Shtetl und Shtot” (2022), “Koffler's Fate: The Goldberg Variations” (2023), and “Wagner – A Provocation” (2024). He also writes texts and libretti for orchestra projects, most recently for the world premiere of “Mendele Lohengrin - Ein Klezmer-Singspiel” (2025). As a director, he has created numerous stage designs and larger-scale productions for JCOM, most recently “In der Strafkolonie” (2024).
His close connection to JCOM developed during his time as a dramaturge at the Kammerspiele. At the same time, he began his long-term project SCHICKSALE in 2018, in which he, together with Janne and Klaus Weinziel and Felicitas Friedrich, researched the biographies of employees of the Munich Kammerspiele who were persecuted under the Nazi regime and made them accessible to the public. As a result of this research, he founded the artistic research department “Erinnerung als Arbeit an der Gegenwart” (Memory as Work on the Present) in 2021, whose work “Oasis de la impunidad,” directed by Marco Layera, was selected by the NY Times in 2022 as one of the best plays worldwide. His own directorial work “Time Busters” (2023, Münchner Kammerspiele) was honored with an invitation to the 2024 Theatertreffen der Jugend (Youth Theater Meeting), among other accolades. Immediately after October 7, 2023, Martin Valdés-Stauber also accompanied Yael Ronen's work “Bucket List” at the Schaubühne Berlin as dramaturg, which was honored with an invitation to the Theatertreffen 2024. In 2021, he was awarded the Marie Zimmermann Scholarship as a young dramaturg in the German-speaking world.
